Summer is gone

Blue MouthOur summer came to a very abrupt end. Just as the weather in Austin is cooling down, changing to beautiful sun filled days with amiable temperatures, we move to Vancouver. And of course - in a big Pacific Northwest style welcome – it rained the day we got here. It has also rained all but three days that we've been here. It's almost been three weeks. Not surprisingly it is raining right now. Earlier tonight it had stopped raining for a bit and I thought I'd take advantage and grill myself a ½ lb burger. Before my burger was ready to be flipped, it was pouring again, soaking me to the bones while I flipped and retrieved my dinner. On the bright side there have been a couple days where the sun was shining while it rained. There was also a beautiful morning where I jumped out of bed and saw the most beautiful blue sky. Not a single white puff in all that blue. It was raining within 90 minutes.

In addition to the continual depression, I am trying to get used to wearing so much. I don't even know where my shorts are. I wear long pants, long sleeves, and the thickest, heaviest underwear I can find. I even dug out my fuzzy slippers. Overnight (well actually over 4 nights because that damn truck was so slow) we went from a single sheet covering us at night, to a sheet, light blanket, two quilts, and a down comforter. I lived four summers in Austin: the first two I hated, the second one was bad. Finally, in the summer of 2008 I decided I love Austin's climate. I hope it doesn't take as long to re-acclimate myself to Vancouver.

It isn't all bad here. There are trade-offs. It's beautiful here (sometimes even when it's raining). But I don't want to bore you with all the good stuff.

We didn't do a very good job of keeping you apprised of our summer. Bryson went away for 11 weeks spending time with my parents and Denise's parents. He had a great time and up until he stepped foot in Texas he didn't want to come back to his parents. Once he was back home I think he realized he missed us a bit. He was also excited that we would soon be moving back to Washington where he knew he would be closer to grandparents.

While Bryson was gone Denise and I enjoyed our time together. We spent a lot of time at the lake, spent a day at Schlitterbahn, even went camping (finally), and sold the house. We took advantage of being able to leave the house together late at night without having to disturb the kid. Obviously we had enough fun that we didn't take the time to document it for you. I'll see what new pictures I can scrounge up and post them in the gallery.

Denise did most of the packing (since she's the woman), but I did actually help out this time. The week before our move, my Grandma Ruby passed away. Bryson and I drove up to say our goodbyes, leaving Denise to pack. Grandma had such a tremendous impact on my life that I won't even try and put my feelings into words. I'll miss her. Maybe Bryson will even have some vague memories of his great-great-grandma. Bryson stayed in Preston while I flew back for my wife and everything we own. We signed some papers, shed a tear, and slowly made our way from our old home in Texas to our new home in Washington.

And here we are. Our new home. Where it rains a lot. Within the first week I managed to run over a huge bolt in our Altima, necessitating a new set of tires. Rather than spend 700 bucks on new tires we decided to part with our favorite car ever and buy an Acura MDX. The coolest thing happened after we bought it: I'm driving down the road, and it starts to rain. As I reach for the windshield wipers – SWISH – they go without my command. That's right - the windshield wipers are automatic! No messing with the delay. It comes in handy almost every day. Because, as I mentioned, it rains a lot.
