Hi

Hey, I got to go play the National Anthem at a Silver Stars game. Got me out of basic training for the evening so I thought I'd take a minute to say hi.  Write me! I like mail.

Hey everyone....

I got Zeb's address today and thought I'd post it so anyone and everyone can write him. Zeb can receive letters and pictures, but not packages. I'm sure he would appreciate and welcome letters of encouragement. He made me promise to write him every day and even took me to the post office the day before he left to buy me two books of stamps. These first 8 weeks, Zeb won't be able to call home or email, so letters are the only means of communication with family and friends that he'll get.

As an update on Bryson and I, we are doing okay. We miss Zeb soooo much, but know that he is doing something great and are really excited about this new adventure in our lives. We can't wait to see Zeb at his graduation in San Antonio on September 18th, which you are all invited to attend. Bryson and I both appreciate all the love and kindness that has been shown to us this week, and very much appreciate the phone calls, text messages, and smiles that have been sent our way.

Denise

Going Away

Bryson started crying after my going away party as the last guests left. I asked what was wrong and he said, "I don't want the party to be over." Figuring he just wanted to play still, I asked why he was so upset. Through his sobs he explained, "It was a going away party and I don't want you to go away already!"

Off To Basic

In high school I researched several possible careers. I was dead set on being a pharmacist as early as junior high and up until I took chemistry in high school. My next idea was to become a pilot. I found the easiest way to do so was by joining the military. Unfortunately, my vision wasn’t good enough to take that route. But for some reason the idea of me joining the military kind of stuck with me.

My senior year in high school I almost joined the National Guard – twice. I really wanted to but others scared me out of it. There were also other uncertainties that didn’t get cleared up and so I didn’t ever end up joining. After high school I moved to Phoenix for school and again looked into joining, but never got to it.

Not joining is one of the biggest missed opportunities in my life. I have thought about it a lot over the last 10 years. After I got back from France I got a job that I liked where I earned enough that I didn’t want to leave and take the pay cut for military training. So it remained a missed opportunity.

So with the end of downpayment assistance, and thus my income, my opportunity came. I started wondering if I could become a pilot again. Yeah right – my vision didn’t magically fix itself. But as I was looking around I found a job in the Air Force Reserve that I’ll really like. I’m going to be a flying medical technician in an aeromedical evacuation squadron. I leave for basic training on July 20. Yep – that’s in 10 days.

Visiting Cousins

SeattleMy cousin Ashley was at Fort Lewis for a couple weeks for training so we went to Tacoma to see her. We went to dinner and then went to Point Defiance Park. At the park are some rose gardens that we walked through. There were so many different kinds of roses - but I guess that is the point of a rose garden. It's always fun to hang out with Ashley. It seems like she is often close to us for her training whether we are in Texas or Washington.

After seeing Ashley we headed north to Seattle to see my cousin Toni. We stayed the night at her apartment and then she took us out to see the sights the next day. We went to Pike's Place Market and picked up some good food. Denise wanted to get some produce and I found a place to get some good imported cheese and charcuterie. As we were leaving I mentioned that I was really wishing I could find some pain-au-chocolat. So Toni helped me find a French bakery that made it. I was so excited and it was so good - it is the first time I have found the stuff since being back from France. It also reminded me why I gained 50 pounds while in France.

Once we were done at the market we headed over to Alki Beach for a better view of Seattle. We walked out on the beach to sit and watch the water for a bit while Bryson played in the sand. We finished the day off, getting a bread bowl of chowder and some fish and chips at Ivar's.

We had a fun trip. Pictures are in the Heading North album to prove it.

Tape Player

Bryson got a portable tape player (is that a walkman? I don't remember) from his Grandma Minzghor. He was excited because he was able to come home and listen to the tapes that go with some of his books from Grandma Petterborg. He also listens to his music while he cleans his room (or does whatever he does while he is supposed to be cleaning his room.)

Packed Garage

One night there was a horrible storm coming our way with possible hail stones the size of golf balls. Not wanting a polka dented SUV we frantically pushed everything to the sides of our ridiculously small garage so we could squeeze the MDX in there. This is how it looked. It was so crowded I couldn't get out the doors, but had to go out through the back.

May Adventures

Throwing RocksIn May, Bryson and I went to a father-son campout. We had Chase and Jonathan Porter come along with us. Bryson and chase had lots of fun playing ball and throwing rocks in the water. We camped at a nice, tranquil place near a creek. It was a little wet and we had a hard time getting the fire going (that's right - Jonny for the first time in his life had a hard time getting a fire going.) The Master of Fire (Jonny, not Satan) finally got it and we had just enough wood to cook our tin foil dinners and a few s'mores. Bryson was begging to go to bed by the time dinner was done because it was getting so late.

Over Memorial Day Weekend Denise, Bryson, and I made a trip to Preston to go camping with the family. It was nice to get away for a weekend, and especially nice to be home for relaxing rather than running from event to event. My parents had their trailer, but Denise and I still decided to rough it in a tent. We even got rained on one night, but our tent held up pretty well. Bryson loved that we got a bit of four-wheeling in. On the drive back home we stopped at Multnomah Falls to let Bryson see the waterfalls.

It was nice for a couple weeks in May and we took advantage by getting to the beach on the Columbia River. We go to Wintler Park which is only about 15 minutes from our place and has some nice sand. We got pretty dark tans for a while before the clouds moved back in.

Pictures of our May adventures are in the May 2009 album in the gallery.
